The all-important task of protecting one’s sources becomes more difficult as state intelligence and private spy companies work to penetrate communication. And when working on topics such as organized crime and corruption, journalists must work to ensure their personal safety, regardless of their country of residence. This workshop will examine actions that can put journalists and their sources at risk and how to avoid them; which applications and programs are safe to use for communication and encrypting files; and how to increase security when interviewing and reporting on dangerous people. Participants will learn how to use selected programs and apps and will exchange encrypted messages with the trainer and fellow participants. They also will gain knowledge about planning secure meetings.
The event is most suitable for journalists with experience covering sensitive topics and those in contact with sensitive sources. Others, including journalism students, might find it less relevant but are welcome to attend. The workshop requires a separate registration.. Journalists from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Serbia. If you are NOT from any of these countries, this ticket is not valid.
