Climate Change as a Journalistic Topic: Experiences From Germany and Czechia
Coverage of climate change, one of today's greatest societal challenges, has not surprisingly lagged behind the coronavirus pandemic. But its influence is not weakening. In Europe we have been encountering prolonged periods of drought, lower snowfall, and a change in weather in general. As a complex, global phenomenon, climate change can be difficult to grasp, and journalists need tools and approaches to tackle this task. Representatives of Czech and German media will discuss their experiences.

Sailing through Troubled Waters: Journalism in Poland and Hungary
In Hungary, most news outlets are controlled by the state or by close friends and associates of the prime minister. In Poland's deeply polarized society, liberal media are under attack, and the public service media serve as government propaganda. Independent media in both countries find themselves under rising pressure from public institutions as well as informal networks affiliated with those in power. Earlier this year, 80 journalists resigned in protest after the dismissal of the editor in chief of index.hu, a reputable independent news outlet in Hungary. Gazeta Wyborcza, the biggest independent news outlet in Poland, is being targeted by an avalanche of libel lawsuits concerning articles about the government, government agencies, and state-owned companies, and faces growing pressure from legislative changes. Nevertheless, the journalists continue to fight for press freedom. What is the way forward? Are there any changes in sight? What can the international community do to help? Roman Imielski of Gazeta Wyborcza and András Földes of Telex will discuss these questions and what works in the fight for media freedom in the two countries.

Combating Attacks on Journalists’ Digital Rights
Journalists in Turkey not only suffer from direct government oppression but from broader infringements on digital rights. Already blocking access to a large amount of online media content, the authorities now aim to impose draconian laws on social media. The Freedom of Expression Association is a leading CSO in Turkey in the field of press freedom and digital rights that has taken on the fight against these trends. What lessons can journalists learn from the developments in Turkey? How can journalists counter legal changes in the online realm?

Reimagining Political Debate: What Happens When People Really Listen
TV debates are often staged as battles that need to be won. “Einig?“ (Do You Agree?) is a TV program in Norway that reimagines the political debate format. What happens when participants must listen to each other, may not interrupt, and must strive to understand their opponents? This type of constructive debate has been envisioned to help discuss today‘s major challenges and to bring together the diversity of opinions reflected in society. What have been some of the most interesting moments in “Einig?“ How does a show without a host steer the discussion? What are some of the producers‘ takeaways? All this and more will be answered by Gro Engen, the program's editor and a journalist at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation.

Reporting on Central and Eastern Europe's LGBTQI+ Communities: More Opportunities, More Threats
In-depth, objective, and sensitive reporting of LGBTQI+ communities is at record highs across the globe. Bucking this trend are populist movements in Central and Eastern Europe that have led to reporting of marginalized communities often being filtered through the distorted lens of state-captured media. LGBTQI+ persons, activists, and journalists are targeted both physically and online at dramatically rising levels. This session will discuss these worrying trends, the media's role, and helpful resources, including EJC’s just-released “LGBTQI+ Communities: A Reporters' Guide.“ Download the guide in pdf below (published on Dec 4, 2020), the link is visible only when you are logged in.

(Re)Contextualizing Gender-Related Public Discourse with Satire
The increasingly popular genre of news satire has found its place in gender-related issues. Developed by comedians, it has been adopted by some news media and helps contextualize gender-related issues appearing in the public discourse. The Polish "Przy Kawie o Sprawie" (EN subtitles under cc) turns stereotypes inside out. Single episodes have been viewed by more than 150,000 people on YouTube. And in Czechia, more than 50,000 follow the satirical current affairs commentaries of “Branky Body Kokoti“ (EN subtitles under the cogwheel) on Facebook, and fans attend live tapings. The panelists will discuss how to use this genre as a tool to introduce new perspectives on current issues to the wider public.

How to Report in (and on) a Polarized World Without Making Everything Worse
There is nothing simple about conflict. Yet news coverage of issues such as immigration, the economy, and health care is often reduced to simplistic framings and neat soundbites. The failure of journalism to understand people’s motivations and experiences, rather than their positions, has fostered misinformation, fear, and distrust. Journalists can learn from conflict mediators to combat this polarization and increase understanding of “the other” through their reporting.

Collaborative Creation of Trust through Local Media Innovation
The local press enjoyed remarkable levels of public trust throughout the 20th century, but no longer. The Regpress 2 - Project presented in this session deepens knowledge about the environment in which the regional press operates. It also provides applied research for the regional press, which faces the challenge of becoming leaner and more competitive while maintaining its presupposed role as a reliable “trust anchor.“ What is the relationship between regional media and local citizens? What are the expectations of the press to be part of community life? How to remain relevant and make it happen with limited resources? Find out what answers the Regpress 2 -project has to these questions and more.

Constructive Journalism in Greece: Weathering Many Storms
Years of social turbulence have eroded trust in the news media and public institutions in Greece. Greeks increasingly turn to social media and other online sources for news and have some of the highest levels of online news consumption in the West. Within this context, Orthos Logos entered the picture in early 2019. Greece’s first solutions journalism startup, Orthos Logos operates on a subscription-based model, aims to reduce polarization in society, and provides evidence-based journalism. Can such a publication succeed? What do the first two years of its existence demonstrate? How can a startup with limited funding weather storms such as the pandemic and economic recession? This presentation charts possible answers.

Journalism and Social Justice: A Reform Agenda
Objectivity has been the goal in U.S. journalism for about a hundred years, but now its normative aspirations have increasingly come into question. With interactive channels of communication and more populist political environments, journalists have lost their privileged vantage point as arbiters of truth. In the United States and beyond, the Black Lives Matter movement, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic have heightened public awareness to blind spots in objective information. This presentation explores the role of social justice in current journalism, highlighting how journalists can reconcile their quest for truth with acknowledging calls for social justice and as a result strengthen their trustworthiness, accountability, and transparency. How is social justice constructed in journalism? What are some of the attempts to reform the current discourse? What ethical considerations should journalists make? This presentation will provide answers based on textual analysis of major trade publications.

Citizen-generated Fact-checking Platforms: Outgrowing failing Media Infrastructures
The coronavirus pandemic in Chile included an assault by fake news on social networks. The disinformation came not only from faceless bots but from the government. In this environment a variety of grassroots journalistic projects emerged, from the efforts of reporters and other media professionals working outside traditional news organizations. Through an analysis of two digital projects, ChileRegistra and FastCheck, this session explores how citizen reporters mobilized to create transparency devices that called on traditional media to react properly against disinformation. How did these new projects operate? What can be gathered from them about the Chilean media landscape? Can open data generated by civil society counter disinformation?

Organized Disinformation in Poland: An Ongoing Investigative Story
The Reporters' Foundation has long been working on exposing the troll farms in Poland. Their reporters went undercover to work at one. They also examine disinformation for hire that is a growing branch of business, along with disinformation and propaganda organized by politicians. Most recently, they focused on mapping the resonance of the QAnon conspiracy theories that are spreading from the US to Europe. In this session, Anna Gielewska of the Reporters' Foundation will not only talk about these findings but also share what new approaches and methods to use and how to foster cross-sector cooperation to get the results you want.

How to Expose an Illegal Arms Business in Your Pajamas
There are currently about 30 armed conflicts around the world: civil wars in Syria, Libya, Yemen, and South Sudan; territorial disputes in Ukraine and Turkey; ongoing conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh; instabilities in Lebanon, Egypt, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. All need weapons and ammunition, and a lot of it. But the arms trade is one of the most opaque global businesses. There are no arms deals between Syria and Bulgaria, but you’ll find Bulgarian rockets all over Syria. Not only are there no arms deals between Libya and Serbia, there is an arms trade ban in place. If you know where to look, however, you can find pictures and videos of newly produced Serbian mortars in Libya. Unless your media organization sends you to the battlefield to research, how do you get to the bottom of this? It’s actually simple, if you know where to look.

The techniques and strategies taught will help participants learn new ways to address this pivotal moment in our global society through stronger, more inclusive conversations and reporting on divisive issues. Our virtual workshop will address the following pillars of Complicating the Narratives, specifically, how to:

Pillar 1: Listen differently when covering a contentious, polarizing issue

This is your opportunity to learn the ins and outs of Solutions Journalism – rigorous and compelling reporting on responses to social problems. At the three-hour workshop you will learn all you need to know about this approach, which has been transforming newsrooms across the United States and is now expanding to Europe and other parts of the globe. Come hear what it is, why it's important, and why practitioners feel it gets them back to why they wanted to become journalists in the first place. Learn also how to identify a potential solutions angle and turn a “traditional” news piece into a solutions one. We will explain how to write or broadcast your own Solutions Journalism stories, from idea to reporting to completed piece.
Together, we will also have a look at several best practice examples and make a quick analysis of a solutions-oriented story. And before you leave, you will learn how to pitch solutions stories and even pitch your own for feedback if you have some ideas.

The Zoom link will be emailed to all registered participants.

Verification of information and fact-checking are valuable skillsets that help journalists and fact-checkers to provide timely service to citizens in crisis, such as the COVID-19 infodemic. But we need more. We need resilient citizens who are equipped with some of these skills themselves. Media education in schools aims to provide such knowledge, but often there is no time to wait for educational curricula to be developed and implemented. In such a case, we need journalists and fact-checkers to deploy a full counter-disinformation package: monitor -> factcheck -> debunk -> publish -> educate.

In this session, we will use concrete case studies from the COVID-19 infodemic to demonstrate and discuss the methods of improving the media literacy of our communities during emergencies. You will also learn how to turn such experiences into attractive educational modules for schools. We will work together to provide very concrete and practical inspiration if you would like to produce stories about disinformation.

Please note, your General Admission ticket is not valid for this session, you need to purchase a workshop ticket here.
